Fast Forward to More Natural Computer Interactions

Fast Forward to More Natural Computer Interactions Seeing beyond the eight core (or more?) computer chip expected in the near future, Andrew Chien, Intel Research director, foresees terascale computers that will deliver trillions of calcs/sec via cores in the hundreds. One current shortfall, he speculates, may be "inference and sensors," perhaps the missing link to ubiquitous computing. In short, smarter computers with terascale processing could allow us to interact more naturally with computers and vice versa. In fact, with machine-learning algorithms, devices could know your past behavior via sensors — analyzing your speech, determining your mood, recognizing your current surroundings, etc. — then deciding how you should be notified of a call or e-mail.

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

Original DynaTAC Engineering Team from Motorola, Inc. Receives 2007 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

On Wednesday, October 10, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to members of the original DynaTAC engineering team in honor of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the first portable, hand-held telephone.

This small band of engineers in Applied Research at the Communications Division of Motorola helped shape telecommunications history. Their work resulted in the DynaTAC, a portable, hand-held, mobile telephone showcased to the world in April 1973, and the precursor of today's cellular telephone.

DynaTAC Primary Designer Donald Linder accepted the award on the team's behalf at a ceremony held at Millennium Park in Chicago. John Walls, vice president of public affairs for CTIA (The Wireless Association) and Tracey Koziol, corporate vice president of Mid and High Tier Devices for Motorola, were on hand to recognize the team for their remarkable accomplishment. Breathing Longer Life into FPGA Systems

Breathing Longer Life into FPGA Systems Field upgrades can extend the life of FPGA-based systems by years — a good alternative for designers instead of redesigning an obsolete system. Beyond reliability and security, updates should follow four basic requirements, according to the Automotive DesignLine article, "The FPGA 'Fountain of Youth.'" Today, FPGA can be upgraded remotely with no need for a physical system tear down.

"Red Hot" IC Chips Function at 500C

'Red Hot' IC Chips Function at 500C Developed at NASA Glenn Research Center, a new SiC (silicon carbide) integrated circuit chip performed 100x better than previous high-temperature chips by operating at 500 C for 1700+ hr. Slated for sensing and combustion control in a jet engine's hot section, the high-temperature chip could also find use in autos, oil/natural gas apps, and even robots exploring the surface of Venus.

Wireless Sensor Nets Sans Batteries

Wireless Sensor Nets Sans Batteries Functioning without power cables or a battery, a 5 cm2 electronic module is a self-contained communication system, incorporating an antenna, transmitter/receiver, and ultra-low-power mesh network software. The latter can be configured to exploit energy-harvesting power resources such as solar, electromagnetic, and piezoelectric transducers. In the works is a chip counterpart to which, like the module, OEMs can add their own applications.

Building Reliable Mobile/Wireless Systems

Building Reliable Mobile/Wireless Systems Wireless data options are being routinely adapted by companies to streamline their operations and slash costs. Whether used for industrial automation, by field service technicians, or by customer reps, two key ingredients determine wireless reliability: the wireless technology and related hardware. Presenting a technology overview, this InTech article relates how to get deployment right. Pictured: a cell tower in palm-tree disguise.

Sensor "Safety" Nets Can Catch Catastrophies

Sensor 'Safety' Nets Can Catch Catastrophies In combination with visual inspections, embedded sensor networks are undoubtedly the best way to monitor safety-critical structures — aircraft, bridges, buildings, nuclear plants, ships — and detect defects prior to disasters like the Minneapolis' I-35W bridge. Unfortunately, sensor-based SHM (structural health monitoring) is too new for inclusion in U.S. codes, reports EE Times-Asia. Fortunately, comparative vacuum monitors, nanotube paint, piezoelectric patches, and similar systems are now being developed. [Access to this article may require registration.]

Virtualization Slashes Data Center Costs

Virtualization Slashes Data Center Costs On a cost basis, adapting max data center efficiency via virtualization makes sense. Typical benefits of doing so point toward higher computing throughput, less power consumed, and a reduced server footprint. So, if you missed the October 9 live event on the subject, you can now view the recorded e-seminar. In practice, it's possible to offset the cost of the virtualization project or even more from power and cooling savings alone. [Access to this article may require a short registration.]
